Construction Trades pathway

The Construction Trades Pathway leads to a huge range of career choices in the industry. Construction jobs involve more than just what you see on a building site. These involve designing, planning and project management, as well as doing the hands-on, practical work.

A project can be a ‘new build’, a renovation or a refurbishment. Larger construction companies specialise in particular markets or sectors – for example, healthcare projects. Some work in a range of sectors while other companies provide expertise in just one or two areas. Many construction professionals specialise in a particular type of project over time.

Construction professionals’ overall priorities are to ensure that their projects are attractive, safe, sustainable (environmentally friendly), and completed on time and within budget.

You will get the opportunity to develop skills in woodworking, plastering, painting and decorating, bricklaying, wall and floor tiling, while also learning about core subject areas such as health and safety, and working and communicating effectively in the construction trades.

In addition, you will develop skills in joints; fit architrave and skirting; fit ironmongery to an internal door; use plaster materials to produce moulds; plaster a ceiling, walls and corners; apply paint to substrates; apply wallpapers to substrates; prepare substrates for painting and decorating; build a block wall, brick wall and cavity wall; and tile floors and walls.
