Grimsby student shortlisted for national NCFE Aspiration Award
A student from The Academy Grimsby, part of the TEC Partnership, has been recognised nationally after being shortlisted in the NCFE Aspiration Awards.
Ela Burton has been named a finalist for Learner of the Year, celebrating an exceptional journey of academic achievement, resilience and personal growth.
The Academy Grimsby provides an alternative route into college or employment for young people aged 14-16, offering vocational pathways that help students develop skills, confidence and career ambitions.
Ela, who studies Health and Care, was selected for the national recognition after consistently exceeding expectations throughout the course. Alongside achieving outstanding academic results, Ela has demonstrated professionalism, leadership and a strong commitment to supporting others.
Known for producing work of exceptional quality, Ela combines advanced research, critical analysis and the ability to apply learning to real-world situations. Tutors have praised Ela’s motivation, independent study and determination to continually improve.
Beyond academic success, Ela has also made a significant contribution to the wider learning community, acting as an informal mentor to peers by helping explain complex topics, encouraging collaboration and supporting a positive learning environment.
Ela has ambitions to study medicine and has already pursued opportunities beyond the curriculum. One standout achievement included independently researching and delivering a presentation on “adeno-associated virus as a delivery for CRISPR gene editing to treat BRCA-related cancers” to a panel of professionals, demonstrating exceptional ambition and intellectual curiosity.
Taylor-Amy Burgess, Health and Care teacher at The Academy Grimsby, said:
“Ela truly embodies the spirit of the NCFE Aspiration Awards. Her dedication, growth and positive impact make this recognition incredibly well deserved. We are extremely proud to see Ela shortlisted at a national level.
“Ela’s achievement is a fantastic example of the talent, ambition and determination we have among young people in our region.
“Being shortlisted for a national award is an incredible accomplishment and reflects not only Ela’s hard work, but also the value of vocational education in helping young people discover their strengths, build confidence and progress towards exciting futures.
“At The Academy Grimsby, students are given opportunities to develop both academically and personally, and Ela’s success shows how alternative routes into education can have a transformational impact.
“We are immensely proud of Ela and the positive example this sets for other young people across our communities.”
The nomination is being celebrated across The Academy Grimsby and the wider TEC Partnership, with staff recognising Ela’s professionalism, resilience and inclusive approach.
Ela’s success also highlights the importance of providing high-quality vocational and technical education opportunities locally, helping young people gain the skills, confidence and experience needed for future careers.
The winners of the NCFE Aspiration Awards will be announced later this year.
